Before Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” movie released, everyone was talking about it. Vox gives the details of the off-screen scandals here
Audience members gave it a 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics gave it a (much, much lower) score of 38%
W Magazine: Yup, there was a real divide between critics (who panned it) and your average Joe (who pretty much liked it)
So what’s going on here? Time has an idea: Sexism. We hold ambitious female directors to a different standard than their male counterparts. It’s not fair
Also, director Wilde had a relationship with star Harry Styles. The Independent said Olivia had to defend her relationship to everyone. Obvious misogyny
Metro: Yup. Styles stans attacked Wilde because of her 10-year age gap with Styles
The NYT Magazine: Social media cursed the movie. It also didn’t help that the film is hugely feminist and most critics are men
But Screenrant says it’s not that deep: The movie sucked
An NBC Op: Uh, what? The movie’s amazing! It’s artsy and complex. Offscreen feuds didn’t affect the quality of the film
A Her Campus Op was also a fan: “Dis on Wilde all you want, but she’s a great director. Don’t listen to the hate -- DWD is a good movie”
And Variety argues that the film was actually helped by the drama: The media storm probably got more people to see it
