Here’s what happened: Hunter Schafer, a trans woman, liked and commented on an Instagram post that implied nonbinary people were to blame for Florida’s recent anti-trans laws
Into Mag
The Twitter backlash was swift, reports Into Magazine. Fans pointed out that nonbinary people probably don’t have a ton of influence on Florida’s transphobic laws. Many also called Hunter a transmedicalist
Out
Wait, what exactly is transmedicalism? Out.com says it’s basically the idea that there’s only one “real” type of trans person: someone with dysphoria who *medically* transitions from one traditional gender to the other. This of course excludes many non-binary and people who think of themselves as trans
Feminist Wire
The Feminist Wire digs a little deeper: Transmedicalism is often motivated by the idea of “transtrenders” -- the idea that some non-trans people pretend to be trans, which takes up “real” trans people’s limited resources. It comes from a deeply emotional place, but just harms the community
Medium
This trans blogger says, “Yes, blaming nonbinary people for Florida’s anti-trans laws is obvious nonsense. But we need to allow open dialogue and free speech, instead of canceling Hunter for her legitimate concerns”
WaPo
This WaPo Op agrees transmedicalism is very gatekeepy. But it comes from an understandable fear: The growing nonbinary community will lead to society not considering transness a medical condition -- which will then lead to denying trans people healthcare. Being trans is just complicated, OK!
Medium
This Medium blogger and self-identified transmedicalist says it’s not about excluding nonbinary people, it’s about making a good, reasonable case to cis society to protect trans rights. “Self-identification” is too wishy-washy for a lot of people, but they do defer to science and medicine
Mic
Mic: It’s so, so complicated. Some (but not all) nonbinary people are trans, some (but not all) trans people are nonbinary -- and really, the definitions of those terms aren’t at all set in stone. But that’s the beauty of queerness: nuance and individuality within community
PinkNews
By the way, Hunter responded to the backlash: “I am not a trans medicalist” and don’t hate nonbinary people. But she also added that nonbinary people take up too much space in trans communities and we need to talk about it. PinkNews says Twitter remained unimpressed
