In New York State, The Times-Union reports you now need to be 21+ to buy whipped cream canisters. The law’s been on the books since last year, but enforcement started in August 2022
Read the law here
But wait... Why? Well, because the nitrous oxide used to whip cream is often inhaled as a recreational drug called “whippets”, especially by young people -- The Independent
Them.us: Whippets usually give the user a short-lived, “loopy” high, and are super accessible. But they have real risks -- overuse can cause brain damage, heart problems, and more
WNYT says New Yorkers have mixed feelings about the law
When the UK considered criminalizing nitrous oxide last year, The Conversation Magazine wasn’t on board. The risks from whippets are way low; we should focus on other drugs instead
This Twitter user agrees -- New York has needle exchange programs, but wants to ban whipped cream to prevent drug use? What??
In fact, Twitter suggested a bunch of stuff that New York should’ve banned before banning whipped cream. This user said fentanyl (which, by the way, is already illegal)
Another said, “How about we age-restrict guns instead”
If you need an ID to buy whipped cream, you should need an ID to vote, says this Twitter user
And this user threw out a curveball -- how about instead of banning whipped cream, we ban Taylor Swift?
But USA Today says chill! All this hullabaloo is based on misinfo and bad reporting. You can still buy whipped cream, people! You just have to be 21+ to buy the nitrous oxide canisters -- not the same thing
