Two Pinocchio movies debuted this year, one from Disney (by Robert Zemeckis) and the other from Netflix (by Guillermo del Toro). Which should you see?

Roger Ebert loves the Netflix version, it’s a 4/4 -- it’s mature and the animation is excellent. You can really see the craftsmanship

But he didn’t like the Disney version at all, just 1.5/4 -- it’s a sloppy remake that is neither true to the original story nor an interesting new spin

Cultured Vultures hated the Disney version too, calling it the “worst Disney remake yet”. Even The Lion King was better!

YouTuber La’Ron Readus says the hate for the Disney remake goes too far -- it’s not as magical as the 1940 version, but it’s a great film for kids (the target audience!)

The WSJ says the Netflix version is a great critique of fascism in 1930s Italy, and is extremely faithful to the 1883 Carlo Collodi book

Polygon loves it too -- It’s Guillermo del Toro’s best work since Pan’s Labyrinth. He’s a living legend!

Slash Film says they’re both very different, and will cater to completely different audiences. Watch both if you want to!
