Bulgaria -- once one of Russia’s closest allies -- also took a hard stance against the invasion

Turkey also has strong ties to Russia, but has declared the invasion a “war”. And it invoked a 1936 treaty that limits Russian warship movement in the Black Sea

Still, Turkey won’t go as far as other countries in Europe. President Tayyip Erdogan says it won’t end its relationship with Russia

But even Kazakhstan refuses to recognize the breakaway regions in Ukraine or send troops to help Russia

And in one of the strongest statements from a former Soviet ally, Uzbekistan denounced the invasion and called for a halt to the fighting -- U.S. News & World Report

Also, Kazakhstan canceled its annual Victory Day parade on May 9 -- the celebration of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany -- in protest over the Russian invasion of Ukraine

The WSJ says it was a surprise when Kazakhstan wouldn’t back Russia. Russia worked hard to maintain the relationship since the fall of the Soviet Union. But Ukraine is another former Soviet republic, and it pushed Kazakhstan to look for new alliances

Putin may also be losing support from his economic partners outside of Europe. During a summit in mid-September, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Putin to end the war. Since the invasion, India has become the second largest buyer of Russian oil

In March, The Economist unveiled its “Putin’s Pals Index” -- it said that despite Russia’s claims, its diplomatic power is definitely waning
