In the fall, Starbucks started rolling out a new system to let customers tip on credit/debit card orders. Forbes reports customers are having some serious bad feelings about it
People complained all over the internet: Tipping culture is getting out of control! Entrepreneur collected some tweets here
This TikToker agrees. If you’re getting a service -- like a restaurant dinner or a haircut -- then tip! But Starbucks just isn’t that
Another TikToker: “A tip? On top of a $7 drink? I love you Starbucks, but no way”
This TikToker sees it differently: If you don’t want to tip on an expensive coffee, maybe... don’t buy an expensive coffee? You can make coffee at home, you know
But some baristas aren’t a fan of the new system either. As this TikToker demos, pointing customers to the tip screen can be so awkward
NY Post says it just makes the whole interaction super uncomfortable for everyone -- some employees are even hitting the “no tip” option in advance to spare themselves the awkwardness
But over on the r/Starbucks subreddit, employees don’t get why other baristas are complaining about a big jump in tips: “Bestie I’ll take that extra $150 from your check if you don’t want it”
And Totally-the-Bomb points out that Starbucks tips have dropped a ton since people rarely pay with cash anymore. And Starbucks baristas work hard to make your fancy drinks! So maybe stop freaking over a tiny *optional* tip
And there are actually customers who are into it. This TikToker used to feel guilty for being unable to tip when she didn’t have cash -- problem solved!
